SELECTING YOUR FRIESIAN HORSE

TEMPERAMENT - First and foremost look into the eyes of the horse. Does she/he show a soft, curious look with large, round eyes, or does it have small and/or narrow eyes?

CONFORMATION - Is the forehand proportionate to the hindquarter? Is the leg length proportionate to the body depth? Is the length of the neck proportionate to length of the back? Is the length of the head proportionate to length of the neck? Is the overall bone and substance, such as size of hooves, proportionate to the body mass?

MOVEMENT - View the horse not ridden and/or tacked up to examine its natural movement. Does the horse appear relaxed with a natural balance in all movements?

WALK - Is the walk free and loose as opposed to short and tight?

STRIDE - Is hock action proportionate to knee action? Do the shoulders move as freely as the knees and hocks (not more or less)? Look for the degree of suspension and animation. More is better.

TROT and CANTER - In free movement, is the length of the stride from the hindquarter equal to the length of the forehand stride? Does the horse have natural extension in both trot and canter? How freely does the horse move in the canter? Is there a 3-beat canter? Does the horse have a natural 'uphill' forward movement with natural 'swing' to its back?

TRAINING LEVEL - A properly schooled horse can correctly demonstrate all of the movements required for the performance or competition level at which it is being sold.

Export Preparations

Depending on the final destination of your horse(s), we will take care of all export preparations, such as blood sampling, veterinary documentation, custom papers and if necessary even certification by consulate services. All quarantine needs are coordinated by us.

Different countries have very differing rules.
Please read the basic information for your desired destination below or just contact us in order to discuss your requirements.

We aim to make procedures as easy and comfortable as possible for you. In some countries Receiving Agents may take over when your horse leaves the plane.

Very close connections with long standing business partners exist in Canada and the USA, Mexico, South America, Middle East, Australia and South Africa, Japan and Indonesia.

However, we will usually remain your point of contact and monitor the shipment of your horses till final destination.

ASIA

Nearly all countries in Asia require negative EVA testing. All other preparations for export are easy but vary to some extent depending on the horses' country of origin.

Because of differing EU treaties different regulations apply. Please obtain specific and current information from us.

AUSTRALIA

Horses for export to Australia have to undergo strict quarantine for 30 days prior to departure. Stables have to be separate and acknowledged to follow AQIS regulations. We can offer suitable stabling in our neighborhood. During quarantine horses have to undergo several blood tests, with EVA among them. Because EVA is rather common in Europe, it should be ruled out before any other preparations are taken.

More details and forms can by obtained from us. All tests should be coordinated by us.

CANADA

All horses destined for Canada must return negative blood samplings for infectious anemia by Coggins test (within 60 days) and piroplasmosis (within 30 days). Prior to export horses must undergo quarantine for a minimum of 30 days, to be certified by your veterinary official.

Mares and stallions more than 2 years of age (731 days) must undergo a special CEM testing of negative results within 40 days prior to export.

Within a period of 10 days three swabs must be taken three times: with mares from clitoris fossa, medial clitoris sinus and both sides of lateral clitoris sinus. With stallions samples must be taken from fossa glandis, sinus urethralis and the surface of prepuce.

All CEM swabs must arrive in a refrigerated container at a certified laboratory within 48 hours of having been taken.

Following arrival and unloading in Canada all horses undergo a clinical examination at the airport. They are then transported directly to quarantine stabling at privately owned but certified farms.

Quarantine takes approximately one week for geldings and for stallions and mares under two years of age (731 days). Several blood samples are taken during this period.

Mares and stallions over two years of age must expect a quarantine period between 25-30 days (for mares) and 45-50 days (for stallions). They undergo additional CEM testing.

For mares testing involves several swabs in the genital area. Stallions have to cover two mares, obtained especially for that purpose, and must undergo a special testing program together with these mares.

Further details and forms can be obtained from us. All tests should be coordinated by us.

MEXICO

All horses destined for Mexico must return negative blood samplings for infectious anemia by Coggins test, for piroplasmosis and EVA within 60 days before export. Immediately prior to export horses must have been in quarantine for a minimum of 30 days, to be certified by your veterinary official.

Mares and stallions over 1 year of age (365 days) must undergo special CEM testing with negative results within 60 days prior to export. Three different swabs must be taken with seven days between tests.

After arrival in Mexico horses undergo a clinical check at the airport and proceed to their destination.

More details and forms can be obtained from us. All tests should be coordinated by us. All samplings have to reach the laboratory within 48 hours after being taken by a certified veterinarian.

SAN SALVADOR &
COSTA RICA

Regulations vary from country to country. However one requirement is common to all - a negative result for EVA testing is an absolute must. All other necessary testing is easy to follow.

More details and forms can be obtained from us. All tests should be coordinated by us.

SOUTH AFRICA

Prior to export to South Africa horses must undergo a complex regime of testing. Because the timing of these tests is crucial we offer a "full service", which involves boarding your horse at designated stables while all necessary tests are completed. Preparation for export takes about four weeks. During this time horses must be kept isolated.

Negative EVA testing is one of the most important requirements for import into South Africa. This should be ascertained before any other steps are considered.

SOUTH AMERICA

On receipt of your signed order we will prepare and then send to you all necessary laboratory and veterinary health administration documentation. We aim to make procedures as easy and comfortable as possible for you.

Regulations vary from country to country. However one requirement is common to all - a negative result for EVA testing is an absolute must. All other necessary testing is easy to follow.

USA

All horses must undergo standard arrival quarantine near the airport. This will take 2 to 3 days in those cases where blood samples for infectious anemia (by Coggins test), piroplasmosis, glanders and dourine prove to be negative.

Blood sampling before export is not mandatory and in general positive samples are not to be expected in horses from Western European countries.

There is, however, a fairly big risk of piroplasmosis positive testing if your horse has travelled to Russia, Southern Europe or the South of France. Pre-export testing is therefore generally recommended.

Mares and stallions more than 2 years of age (731 days) proceed to CEM quarantine after they undergo the standard quarantine described above. CEM quarantine must take place at certain officially prescribed farms. Transport to this location must be in a sealed vehicle.

Mares: Within 30 days of export CEM swabs from clitoris fossa and clitoris sinus must return negative. This testing takes about 14 days and is repeated in the United States during further CEM quarantine. The quarantine after arrival therefore takes at least 14 days.

Stallions: Within 30 days of export CEM swabs from fossa glandis, sinus urethralis and from the surface of prepuce must return negative. Testing takes about 14 days. CEM quarantine within the USA is rather burdensome and stallions have to cover two mares, obtained especially for that purpose, and must undergo a special testing program together with these mares, which takes between 30-45 days.

Further details and forms can be obtained from us. All tests prior to export should be coordinated by us. All samplings have to reach the laboratory within 48 hours of being taken by a veterinarian.
