SELECTING YOUR FRIESIAN HORSE

TEMPERAMENT - First and foremost look into the eyes of the horse. Does she/he show a soft, curious look with large, round eyes, or does it have small and/or narrow eyes?

CONFORMATION - Is the forehand proportionate to the hindquarter? Is the leg length proportionate to the body depth? Is the length of the neck proportionate to length of the back? Is the length of the head proportionate to length of the neck? Is the overall bone and substance, such as size of hooves, proportionate to the body mass?

MOVEMENT - View the horse not ridden and/or tacked up to examine its natural movement. Does the horse appear relaxed with a natural balance in all movements?

WALK - Is the walk free and loose as opposed to short and tight?

STRIDE - Is hock action proportionate to knee action? Do the shoulders move as freely as the knees and hocks (not more or less)? Look for the degree of suspension and animation. More is better.

TROT and CANTER - In free movement, is the length of the stride from the hindquarter equal to the length of the forehand stride? Does the horse have natural extension in both trot and canter? How freely does the horse move in the canter? Is there a 3-beat canter? Does the horse have a natural 'uphill' forward movement with natural 'swing' to its back?

TRAINING LEVEL - A properly schooled horse can correctly demonstrate all of the movements required for the performance or competition level at which it is being sold.

Registration by The Official Royal Friesian Studbook (FPS) in Holland

Foals are entered into the Foals Book and are either tattooed on the underside of the tongue or micro chipped.

Friesians mares, stallions and geldings can be entered if they are at least 2.5 years old.

For this they need a minimum withers' height:

- mares of 1.50 meter
- geldings of 1.50 meter
- stallions of 1.58 meter
- stallions of 4 years or over of 1.60 meter
- 'Ster' mares of 1.55 meter
- 'Ster' geldings of 1.55 meter
- 'Model' mares of 1.58 meter

FPS Branding

Registered Friesians are branded with an:

'F' on the left side of the neck, an
'S' is added with 'Aster' mares;
'M' is the marking of a 'Model' mare, whereas

'Crown' is for 'Preference' declared stallions and mares with regard to their descendants. Finally for mares there is the possibility of becoming 'Preference' mother.

A change in Dutch Legislation regarding Animal Welfare makes branding of horses illegal after September 1, 2001. Subsequently, the Board of FPS has ruled to abolish this practice per said date.

Since 1978 the Studbook is closed. From that date onwards no horses with a (partly) unknown decent can be entered.

European Horse Passports

Based on adoption by the Dutch of European Community Directives (nos. 90/426/EC and 90/427/EC) more and more Friesians are issued a horse passport. This document will remain the property of the organization issuing the passport.

The horse passport is not a proof of ownership in a juridical sense.

FPS 'Premies'

Any official awarded 'Premies' will be recorded on the Studbook Registration document. For instance: 1998 3rd 'Premie', 2000 1st 'Premie' or 2003 2nd 'Premie'.

A 'Premie' only tells you something about the horse's state at time of that particular Exhibition. It is definitely not some sort of guaranty.

A pre-purchase examination is always required in order to ensure you buy a sound and healthy horse. Here to read about horse pre-purchase vetting
